Spring break is a week-long break from school that takes place during March or early April. Students use this as a break to travel places, visit family, hang out with friends, and more.
Spring break was introduced to the U.S. during the 1930s. The origins of spring break began when Sam Ingram, a swimming coach from Colgate University, took his team to Florida for a week to do intense training. Soon, other swimming coaches began doing this, and the idea of having a week off spread globally and evolved into what we now know as spring break. Let’s see how our Knights spent their spring break.
“My favorite moment from spring break was getting to ride my bike more,” eighth grader Janneth Flores said. “I don’t normally have time to ride my bike when I have school.”
Many students like to spend their break hanging out with their friends and family. Whether it’s going to fun places, or just hanging out at home. Without school in the way, students have way more time to hang out with each other, that isn’t just during the weekend.
“During spring break, I hung out with my friends a lot and we went to the fair,” seventh grader Madalynn Beiza said. “I really enjoyed riding all the scary rides.”
Spring break opens a week for students to travel without missing school days. A 2023 TransUnion study shows that 48% of families with students travel during spring break.
“I traveled to California because that’s where my aunt and my cousins live,” seventh grader Saron Ferede said. “We got to go to Universal Studios, it was so fun.”
The break allows students and teachers to rest and destress before the last nine weeks, especially with STAAR tests right around the corner. Many students agree that a week-long break is necessary to prepare for the last few months of end-of-the-school-year tests.
“I got to go to sleep late and sleep in, which I’m normally not able to do with school.” seventh grader Angelica Brooks said. “My sleep schedule is so messed up.”
This also opens up a lot of time to go shopping for back-to-school or whatever necessities you need. It’s fun to go shopping with friends, family, or by yourself.
“I went to the mall with my friends,” eighth grader Luziara Garciamedina said. “I bought 3 cute tops and a new perfume.”
