On January 15, the seventh-grade girls basketball team went against Cele. This was a very big game considering both A teams were currently undefeated.
The game took place at CMS, B team (silver) started at 5:30 and A team (navy) followed at 6:30. Both teams have been working hard in practice in preparation for this game. Coming in, silver had a whole roster while the navy only had 7 players, meaning only two subs for the whole game.
“This was especially a hard game for us, but I’m proud of how we acted out there, not letting the scoreboard affect how we played,” Coach Dan Russell said. “Overall I’m glad of how we performed out there.
Silver had a great start to the game, getting the tip off and starting off hot. The team played aggressive defense, pressing them hard. By the second quarter the score was 6-11.
“I think we played really good even if we lost, yall played aggressively and scored a ton,” eighth grader Alianah Beiza said.
By the third quarter silver was down by 6 but refused to give up and continued to fight to the end. The final score was 13-22.
“The scores were pretty close and it looked like anyone could’ve won,” seventh grader Madalynn Beiza said. “I think silver played pretty well and was pretty close to beating them.”
Navy also had a good start, winning the tip off and quickly laying it up. Throughout the first quarter both teams were neck and neck with each other, playing equally aggressive defense and keeping up with offense.
“The game was very fast paced, It’s like I blinked and someone was already scoring.” spectator Janneth Flores said.
Although after the second quarter Cele started locking in, getting a lead on the team and making a big gap. However, they refused to give up, during half time the group had some time to reflect on the first half and think about ways we could catch up. Unfortunately, the Lady Knights were unable to catch up and the final score was 21-55.
“It was a hard game without one of our shooting guards, and we needed to be better at boxing out on defense and making our shots,” player Mila Mitol said.
This was an especially hard game for us, considering Cele is one of the toughest schools to beat, and we put up a fight to the end. Navy placed 2nd in district, and was 4-1.
“I’m proud of how we played, especially not letting our emotions take over and keeping our heads up the whole time,” Coach Maria Bernal said. “We may have lost but I am still extremely proud of us.”
